In a matter of months NARS has become one of my favorite make-up brands - well, due to the over the top quality of some products it was kinda expectable. Despite that I haven't reviewed many Nars products yet here on the blog (Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer excepted) but the time to review some of its make-up gems has come. Blushes are to me the products that really stand out the most in the Nars range, but I adore the lipstick pencils as well, expecially the Velvet Gloss ones. So far I've tried just one Velvet Matte pencil and although I like it, I don't love it. The gloss version is a different story though.
If you read my blog you already know how much I love every peachy hue especially when it comes to lip products so, when Nars came out with Buenos Aires, I couldn't help myself from grabbing it. I knew I would love this shade and in fact it didn't disappoint.
Mi spiace di non aver postato nulla per un po' ma ultimamente sono stata abbastanza impegnata. Comunque sia, ora rieccomi qui con una review che avevo programmato di fare da un po'.
Nel giro di qualche mese infatti, NARS è arrivato ad aggiudicarsi l'etichetta di "uno dei miei marchi preferiti" - okay, vista l'elevata qualità di alcuni prodotti era anche piuttosto prevedibile. Nonostante questo, non ho però ancora scritto molte review sui suoi prodotti (Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer a parte) ma ora direi che è arrivato il momento di parlarne anche qui sopra. Ciò che spicca di più tra tutto il range Nars per me sono sicuramente i blush, ma adoro anche le matite rossetto, soprattutto quelle Gloss. Finora ho provato solo una Velvet Matte Lip Pencil e, anche se non mi dispiace, non posso dire di amarla. La versione gloss invece è un'altra storia.
Se leggete il mio blog saprete già quanto io sia fissata con ogni sfumatura del pesca, specialmente quando si tratta di prodotti labbra, e quindi, quando Nars è uscito con Buenos Aires, non ho potuto fare a meno di acquistarlo. Sapevo che mi sarebbe piaciuta parecchio questa tonalità ed infatti non mi ha delusa.
Talking about Nars Velvet Gloss lip pencils in general...
When it comes to these pencils, the sharpening-matter is the most discussed so I wanna spend some words sharing my experience. Here we go!
As for the packaging, VGLP are like actual pencils. That means they're not like those super handy twist-up sticks but you need a sharpener that fits the larger pencils. And here it comes the main issue: you have to sharpen them about after 7-8 uses, wasting some product into this process due to the softness of the pencil itself (note that with 'after 7-8 uses' I don't mean the pencil has a more rounded tip but that the tip is almost flat at that point - If you like to have a pencil with a perfect tip then you have to sharpen the VGLP after every other use). I read many complaints about the sharpening process but it's always been fuss-free for me actually.
Does the VGLP clog up my sharpener? Nope. This has never happened to me. Of course a bit of product gets stick to the sharpener but it's easy to remove and I didn't even experienced problems while sharpening in the hottest days of summer (say hello to 40°C!) neither have I experienced breakages. So for me the packaging - wastage excepted - is not So bad after all.
The quantity is 2.8g (0.09oz) that's about half the grams of a standard lipstick (3-4g) making the VG pencil not really the best bang for your buck, especially if you're loyal to one product at a time and intend using it on a daily basis: also due to the wastage and the softness it will run out pretty quickly.
Tip: Put the pencil in the fridge for a while before sharpening, so the tip and the inner 'lead' will firm up a bit and will be less prone to break; moreover you'll cut down the wastage of the product.
In merito a queste matite di Nars, la caratteristica più discussa è quella del doverle temperare, quindi vorrei spenderci qualche parola in più a riguardo. Iniziamo!
Per quanto riguarda il packaging, VGLP sono vere e proprie matite. Ciò significa che non sono come quegli stick ultra comodi che fuoriescono ruotando la base, ma che serve un temperino adatto alle matite più larghe (non c'è bisogno di acquistare quello Nars, qualunque temperino col doppio foro, se adattabile, farà il suo dovere). E qui si arriva alla questione: queste matite devono essere temperate ogni 7-8 utilizzi e nel farlo si perde un po' di prodotto a causa della morbidezza (da notare che con "7-8 utilizzi" non intendo che la matita ha una punta più smussata ma che è a quel punto è praticamente piatta - se volete una matita con una punta sempre perfetta dovrete temperarle una volta sì ed una no).
Ho letto molte lamentele su questo fatto e su problemi nel temperarle ma, a dir il vero, io non ho riscontrato alcun intoppo degno di nota.
I residui della matita intasano il temperino? No, a me non è mai successo. Certo, una piccola quantità di prodotto resta attaccata alla lama ma è anche facile da rimuovere e, inoltre, non ho riscontrato inconvenienti neppure nel rifare la punta in estate, nei giorni più caldi (facciamo ciao ai 40°C! Ciao) e neppure la mina interna si è spezzata o ci sono stati disastri simili.
Quindi per me il packaging, spreco inevitabile a parte, non è poi così male.
La quantità è di 2.8g che è circa la metà del rossetto medio (sui 3-4g) e quindi non lo rende propriamente il prodotto col rapporto quantità/prezzo migliore del globo, soprattutto se di norma restate fedeli ad un prodotto per volta e volete usarlo quotidianamente: inoltre, un po' per lo spreco nel temperarle e un po' per la texture cremosa, sono matite che si consumano in fretta.
Tip: mettete la matita in frigo prima di temperarla, così la punta e la mina interna si induriscono un po' ed è meno probabile che si spezzino; inoltre si limita anche la quantità di prodotto che rimane attaccata alla lama che andrebbe sprecata.

Speaking about the formula, for me the Velvet Gloss lip pencils are somewhere between a gloss and a lipstick.
They're creamy but not too much (mine didn't even melt when it was 40°C outside), go on smoothly and feel lightweight on the lips.
The feeling is not like wearing a gloss neither a lipstick, but it's kind of having a 'thick' balm on lips (VGLP are not thick per se, but they are this way against the texture of a regular balm). Also, they'reslightly sticky, but so subtly that I think they can bother only who can't even stand the slightest sticky feeling - As for me, I'd dare to describe them as 'comfortable' actually. Moreover, they are not drying at all.
The finish is glossy, not exactly like a liquid lip gloss, but it's still glossy and, unlike glosses, VGLP are not slippery and they stay on, without bleeding or smearing. Indeed they're like a long-lasting "glossy product" for me and my standard wearing time, as they last from 2 to 3 hours and a half on me (3h is my average wearing time for a lipstick, glosses tend to wear much less instead).
The color payoff is good but if you're looking for something opaque, then skip these: VGLP are not full coverage. They're sheer but not in a 'are you wearing just a balm on your lips?' kind of way though, as you can see that the pigmentation, despite being light, is there. Making a comparison, colored balms or lipsticks like Mac Glaze-s are less pigmented than Velvet Gloss pencils.
Lastly, I find them extremely easy to apply because of the nice texture and the blunt tip, that allows you a better control and a more precise application - that's always convenient especially for the intense shades.
They don't have any discernible taste or smell for me.
Passando alla formula, per me le matite Velvet Gloss sono qualcosa a metà tra un gloss ed un rossetto.
Sono cremose ma non troppo (le mie non hanno dato segni di cedimento neppure con 40°e più esterni), si stendono facilmente e risultano leggere sulle labbra.
La sensazione non è quella di indossare un gloss e neppure un rossetto, ma è più come avere un balsamo labbra un po' consistente (per quanto le VGLP risultino 'consistenti' solo rispetto ad un balsamo e non di per sé). Inoltre, sono legger(issima)mente appiccicose, ma talmente poco che credo possano dare noia solo a chi davvero non riesce a sopportare neanche la benché minima sensazione vagamente collosa - per quanto mi riguarda, mi azzardo invece a definirle "confortevoli", considerando pure che non seccano affatto le labbra.
Il finish è lucido, non proprio come un gloss, ma comunque lucido e, diversamente da molti lipgloss, le matite VG non risultano scivolose e restano fisse sulle labbra senza sbavare. Io le considero una sorta di "prodotto effetto gloss" a lunga durata, visto che su di me durano dalle 2 alle 3 ore e mezza (quando 3h è la durata media che riscontro coi rossetti, mentre i gloss svaniscono ben prima).
La pigmentazione è buona considerando la natura del prodotto ma se cercate qualcosa che sia coprente, passate oltre: le VGLP non lo sono. Sono sheer ma comunque non in stile 'indossi del burrocacao?' e la pigmentazione, anche se non piena, c'è e si nota. Per fare un confronto, i balsami labbra colorati o rossetti come i Glaze di Mac sono meno pigmentati di una Velvet Gloss.
Infine, trovo siano matite facili e comode da applicare vista la texture e la punta arrotondata, che permette un buon controllo ed un'applicazione discretamente precisa - il che è utile soprattutto con le colorazioni più intense. Non hanno inoltre alcun odore o sapore che io riesca a notare.

As for the Buenos Aires shade...
The description above applies to Buenos Aires too.
It's a light shade but it lasts from 2 to 3 hours and a half on me, after that it fades quite evenly. It even stands a quick (non oily) meal.
It's described as "nude beige pink" but it's more a "peachy nude" to my eyes. The pink tinge is very subtle on me and comes out only under certain lights but it's enough to balance the beige hue. I can see this being flattering on many skin tones. I love wearing it when I look for a natural make up look, but it could be gorgeous when paired with sultry smokey eyes too.

È una colorazione chiara ma dura comunque dalle 2 alle 3 ore e mezza su di me, dopodiché svanisce in modo uniforme. Ma sopporta pure un breve pasto (non unto).
È descritto come "nude beige pink" ma è più un "nude pesca" ai miei occhi. La punta rosata è quasi impercettibile e viene fuori giusto sotto certe luci, ma è presente quel tanto che basta per bilanciare il beige.
La vedo infatti come una tonalità che può funzionare su parecchie carnagioni.
A me piace soprattutto utilizzare Buenos Aires quando ho voglia di qualcosa dall'effetto naturale, ma lo vedo bene anche abbinato ad uno smokey intenso.

As you can see, in terms of pigmentation it's not so sheer and the coverage is similar to Ravishing which is a Mac Cremesheen. Hue (Glaze finish) is instead more sheer. Color wise, the peachy tone is similar to my beloved Mac Peachstock (Satin finish).
Side note: my lips are not so pigmented - if yours are pigmented and you love the shade, you might consider to give Peachstock a try.
Come sempre, ho swatchato Buenos Aires anche accanto a tonalità che non sono molto simili, per dare (spero) una migliore idea del colore.
Come si vede, in termini di pigmentazione non è così sheer e la coprenza è simile a Ravishing di Mac che è un Cremesheen. Hue (Glaze) è invece meno pigmentato. Riguardo al colore invece il tono pesca è davvero simile al mio adoratoPeachstock (che è un Satin, coprente).
Piccola nota: le mie labbra non sono molto pigmentate; se le vostre lo sono e vi siete innamorate della tonalità vi consiglio di dare un'occhiata a Peachstock.

I do like this shade and I find it complements my complexion very well. I must confess that this one and Peachstock are my favorite peachy nude shades, the closest ever to the perfect ones for me. (maybe I should even mention Mac Viva Glam II in this nudes-charts, but that's more on the pinkish/my lips but better land).

Buenos Aires mi piace molto, sia come prodotto che come tonalità e trovo che si integri bene anche con la mia carnagione (modesta, Ale!). È anche il caso di confessare che questo e Peachstock sono i miei nude pesca preferiti in assoluto e quelli più vicini alla perfezione (per i miei colori ed il mio gusto, s'intende).
Forse dovrei anche citare il Viva Glam II di Mac in questa classifica dei nude, ma quello è più nel territorio "le mie labbra ma meglio" anziché in quello "pesca".
Et voilà, vi ho presentato uno dei prodotti Nars che preferisco.
