So after a long while I caved in again with a MAC limited edition item. I got off the 'get it right now or watch it flying off the shelves in a minute' MAC bandwagon months ago because of the insane rush that's going on here every time MAC releases a collection, something I don't feel like to bother with anymore. But when I saw swatches of Punk Couture collection, well, I surrended. To me the highlights of the whole collection are Punk Couture and Instigator lipsticks. I know this collection wasn't released yesterday and Instigator is now pretty hard to find in stores, but it's my first proper dark lipstick and I wanted to give it its 5 minutes of fame here on the blog nonetheless - maybe this post post could be even useful (kind of) in case you find Instigator somewhere or on ebay, otherwise...sorry for this sadistic post.
E così dopo parecchio tempo ho ceduto di nuovo ad un'edizione limitata di MAC. Sono uscita dal meccanismo 'prendilo subito o guardalo andare sold out il minuto dopo' da mesi a causa delle corse folli sul tempo che tocca fare ogni volta che MAC se ne esce con una nuova collezione. Preordini di settimane prima, stalkeraggio del sito, giri di telefonate a N negozi sono cose che personalmente non mi va di fare. Ma quando ho visto gli swatch della collezione Punk Couture, come dire, ho alzato bandiera bianca (tralasciando i ben noti problemi col sito ufficiale italiano, sono riuscita a trovarlo disponibile nel primo store in cui ho chiesto). A mio avviso la parte migliore dell'intera collezione sono i rossetti Instigator e Punk Couture. So che questa serie non è stata lanciata ieri e che Instigator è attualmente difficile da trovare in stock (ma provare nei corner Coin non guasta) però si tratta del primo vero e proprio rossetto scuro che entra in casa D.A. e volevo comunque dargli i suoi 5 minuti di gloria qui sul blog - e forse questo post potrebbe essere addirittura utile (più o meno) in caso lo troviate da qualche parte o su ebay, altrimenti...scusate per il post dal contenuto vagamente sadico.
Instigator has a matte finishand is described as "deep blackened plum" and the description is quite right. After all the swatches I've seen, I'd say is a shade that varies on everyone. On some it looks like a deep burgundy with strong red hues, on others it's more of an eggplant color with just a hint of red to it. And so it looks like on me.
Compared to the other beautiful dark purple in the collection, Punk Couture, Instigator is less cool in tone and not as purple but on me, with my coloring and warm complexion, it definitely leans on the purple territory and the red component isn't very noticeable - as you can see below.
The quality is really good and lives up to Mac's mattes hype. It doesn't tug or pull excessively on the lips which helps not to flip out with the application since a such dark shade calls for extreme perfection - I'd suggest to use a matching lip pencil or a precise lip brush (my favorite method).
It's also opaque and above all delivers an even layer of color, something that I learned not to take for granted when it comes to dark/vampy lipsticks as they often are patchy. The color payoff of Instigator is instead optimal in just one pass.
As for the comfort it doesn't make my lips feel like the Sahara considering it is a matte, but there's but: it is a matte indeed, so exfoliating the lips before applying it is a step I'd suggest in order to make it lookeven better. My lips aren't in their best condition at the moment, suffering winter weather, and are quite dry, so excuse the pictures below. Take them as a reminder: "exfoliation is matte lipsticks' best friend" (though I swear Instigator isn't dry, I want to stress this point).

Instigator ha un finish matteed è descritto come un "prugna scuro imbrunito"(cit.) il che è abbastanza azzeccato. Dopo tutti gli swatch che ho visto, direi che è una tonalità che varia a seconda di chi la indossa. Su alcune sembra un bordeaux molto cupo e intenso con la componente rossa ben in evidenza, su altre risulta più un color melanzana con una sfumatura rossa all'interno appena accennata. E così appare su di me.
Rispetto all'altro viola della collezione, Punk Couture, Instigator è meno freddo nel tono e non è neppure altrettanto viola, per quanto su di me, coi miei colori e la mia carnagione calda, tenda decisamente ad andare verso la terra dei viola e la sua sfumatura rossa non sia granché visibile - come si vede poi sotto.
La qualitàè davvero buona e tiene fede alla reputazione che hanno i matte di casa Mac. Si stende abbastanza agevolmente senza tirare molto le labbra, cosa che aiuta a non scaraventarlo fuori dalla finestra dato che colori tanto scuri richiedono un'applicazione estremamente precisa - e suggerirei anche di utilizzarlo assieme ad una matita abbinata o un pennellino (il mio metodo preferito).
È inoltre coprente e soprattutto crea uno strato di colore omogeneo, qualcosa che ho capito di non dare per scontata quando si tratta di rossetti cupi visto che spesso si stendono un po' a chiazze. Instigator è invece pigmentato già con una sola passata.
Per quanto riguarda il comfort, c'è: non mi fa sentire le labbra come il Sahara considerando che è un matte, ma c'è un ma: è pur sempre un matte, appunto, quindi uno scrub alle labbra non fa mai male ed è un passaggio che suggerirei per farlo apparire ancor meglio. Le mie labbra non sono nelle loro migliori condizioni ultimamente, risentono delle temperature invernali, quindi chiedo venia per le foto sottostanti. Prendiamolo come un appunto: "lo scrub è il miglior amico dei rossetti matte" (per quanto Instigator non secchi molto le labbra, lo sottolineo).
La durata è (prevedibile qui...) anch'essa buona.
Instigator sopravvive a 5-6 ore su di me e si rimuove facilmente con un bifasico senza lasciarsi dietro macchie o aloni. Dopo un pasto (non unto, ecco) è ancora quasi perfetto. Solo che per i rossetti scuri ci vuole estrema perfezione secondo me e quindi quel "quasi" non è abbastanza ed io preferisco ritoccarlo dopo ogni pasto o tazza di the. Il colore copre ancora il 90% delle labbra ma ovviamente sbiadisce nella zona interna, mostrando il tono rosato delle labbra (via a coprirlo!).

I don't own nothing similar to compare it with, but I thought a comparison with other MAC lipsticks that some might think to be in the same family would be nice.
Rebel is all another story and shade, Currant lip pencil is redder and Heroine is a totally different purple hue with a ton of magenta in it.
Non avevo nessun tono simile con cui poterlo confrontare, ma ho pensato che potesse essere utile un paragone con altri colori Mac che qualcuno potrebbe pensare essere della stessa famiglia.
Rebel è tutt'altra storia e tono, la matita Currant ha più rosso ed Heroine è una sfumatura violacea totalmente differente e con molto più magenta all'interno.

Along with the depth and the contrast with my fair complexion, I started to appreciate dark lipsticks also because they are usually "2 colors in 1". This is how Instigator looks like when applied with a brush - and with no lip balm underneath (don't try this at home, kids!).
Oltre alla dimensione e al contrasto col mio pallore, ho iniziato ad apprezzare i rossetti cupi anche per la caratteristica, che hanno spesso, di essere "2 colori in 1". Questo è come appare Instigator quando steso con un pennello - e senza burrocacao sottostante (non provateci a casa, ragazzi!)

And this is Instigator in all its intensity.
I know, it is pretty purple compared to many bloggers' swatches and I checked my camera's white balance, my reflection in the mirror, more than once, but that's how it actually looks like on me.
It's not a lipstick for everyone, for sure, but if you like the idea of a purple-plum color that's not a true purple (which would be a little more difficult to wear for many since cool purple isn't the most universally flattering shade, although it's beautiful), Instigator could be the answer.
E questo è invece Instigator in tutta la sua intensità.
Lo so, è decisamente viola rispetto agli swatch di molte altre ragazze ed ho controllato il bilanciamento del bianco della fotocamera, il mio riflesso nello specchio, più volte, ma questo è proprio come Instigator appare su di me.
Non è un rossetto per tutti, sicuramente, ma se vi piace l'idea di un viola-prugna che non è però un vero viola (che sarebbe un po' più difficile da portare per molte, dal momento che i viola freddi non sono colori che donano facilmente ad un larghissimo gruppo di persone, per quanto siano belli eh), Instigator potrebbe essere la risposta.
