Urban Decay Naked Basics palette: review, swatches, comparisons

I know I know, everyone in the blogging community has been talking about this palette. Do we need another review? Probably not, but I'll doing it anyway - in Italy the Naked Basics hit the stores today so it's still a new product here and I've been asked to write a review of it - and I'll happily do it!
Being the 'natural' makeup junkie enthusiastic I am, I couldn't wait until depths of February and ordered it on sale more than a month ago from the UK. It arrived some weeks ago and I've been using it a lot since then, as expected.
Make yourself comfortable, grab a cup of tea, because this will be a quite long post with swatches and comparisons with Naked 1 and some Inglot eyeshadows.

Lo so lo so, ormai tutti nel mondo dei blog stanno parlando di questa palette. Abbiamo forse bisogno anche della mia review? Molto probabilmente no, ma facciamola comunque - ok che ne è pieno il web ma qui in Italia la Naked Basics è arrivata da Sephora Italia solo oggi e spero che i miei due centesimi a riguardo siano utili a qualcuno, soprattutto a chi era indecisa e mi aveva chiesto un parere sulla palette.
Dal canto mio, essendo la maniaca fissata amante del makeup occhi 'naturale' che sono, non ho aspettato fino a febbraio inoltrato e ho ordinato la Naked Basics più di un mese fa dal UK. È giunta qualche settimana fa e devo dire che la sto usando molto da allora, come era prevedibile.
Quindi, mettetevi comode, preparatevi una tazza di té, perché questo sarà un post abbastanza lungo con swatches e comparazioni con la Naked 1 e alcuni ombretti Inglot.


First of all, the palette houses 6 eyeshadows and 5 are matte, so if you're totally into shimmery or fancy shades this won't call your name for sure.
I think the name 'Basics' actually suits the product itself as the colors chosen are basic indeed, but when blended or mixed together allow you to create many different natural looks or simple smokeys, supposing you're a fan of this sort of make up.
Speaking about the composition, 3 shades out of 6 are very light (I mean very), one is light, another one medium-toned and the last one is dark.


Now I've seen the palette in person, I confirm what I thought the first time I saw a picture: too many light shades.
I do believe it would have been better if Urban Decay had exchanged the second or the third light shade with another medium/darker brown or taupe, for example.
In my humble opinion, the color selection doesn't also make the palette the most suitable for a medium/medium to dark skin tone, and it's a shame. Foxy and WOS might be quite ashy and Naked2 might not show up very well.
On the other hand, Foxy and W.O.S. won't show up extremely well on a fair complexion like mine because so close to my skin tone, Foxy especially. With a primer underneath they do show up, but once applied, despite the difference in undertone, they both look basically the same to me on the lid. That's maybe the main flaw of this palette.


Per iniziare, la palette contiene 6 ombretti di cui 5 matte, quindi se andate di tonalità shimmer o particolari questa palette non vi attrarrà sicuramente.
Il nome 'Basics' calza a pennello direi visti i colori scelti che sono basici per davvero ma, allo stesso tempo, se mixati tra loro permettono di creare differenti look neutri o semplici smokey - sempre ammesso che siate fan di questa tipologia di makeup.
Parlando poi della composizione, 3 colori su 6 sono molto chiari (e intendo molto), uno è chiaro, un altro è medio mentre l'ultimo è decisamente scuro.

Venus: l'unico shimmer di tutta la palette che può essere usato come illuminante o mixato alle altre tonalità matte per movimentarle un po'
Foxy: giallo burro molto chiaro che necessita di un primer per essere ben visibile sulla palpebra
W.O.S. (Walk of Shame): un color carne molto chiaro dal sottotono rosa che, di nuovo, ha bisogno di un primer se volete che sulla palpebra il colore sia simile a quello della cialda
Naked2: marrone chiaro in base fredda, dicretamente pigmentato
Faint: marrone dal tono medio e freddo, ben pigmentato
Crave: nero matte intenso, ben pigmentato

Ora che ho visto la palette in persona non posso far altro che confermare il primo pensiero che ho avuto di fronte alle foto iniziali: troppe tonalità chiare.
Credo davvero che sarebbe stata ancor meglio se Urban Decay avesse scambiato la seconda o la terza tonalità chiara con un altro marrone medio-scuro o un taupe intenso, ad esempio.
A mio modesto avviso, la selezione di colori non la rendono neppure la palette migliore per chi ha una carnagione media o medio-scura ed è un peccato. Foxy e WOS rischiano di essere davvero troppo pallidi mentre Naked2 potrebbe non essere molto visibile.
D'altro canto, Foxy e W.O.S. non si notano un granché neppure su un incarnato chiaro come il mio, essendo così simili al colore della mia pelle, Foxy in primis. Con un primer al di sotto sì, si vedono, ma una volta applicati sull'occhio, nonostante la differenza nei sottotoni, a me sembrano sostanzialmente identici; rendendo un po' inutile la presenza di entrambi nella palette.
E questo è forse il difetto principale della Naked Basics.

The eyeshadows have been heavily swatched. There are 4-5 swipes of Foxy and WOS, which didn't want to show up on my arm (with no primer). They perform better on the lid but don't expect them to be intense. Instead, there's only one pass for Faint and Crave and two for Venus and Naked2.

Gli ombretti sono stati swatchati in modo pesante. Ci sono 4-5 passate di Foxy e WOS, che non volevano farsi vedere sul mio braccio (senza primer). Si comportano meglio sulla palpebra ma non aspettatevi comunque che siano intensi. Invece, di Faint e Crave è stata fatta solo una passata, mentre di Venus e Naked2 due.



Texture wise, it is amazing. These eyeshadows are buttery, finely-milled and smooth and they blends effortlessly.
I find the texture better compared to the matte shades in the Naked 1 and also if compared with the Inglot eyeshadows I swatched against (see picture below).
The pigmentation varies depending on the color with Foxy and WOS the least pigmented, while Faint and Crave are the richiest, as mentioned above. If you prefer just a hint of color, you can apply them straight on the bare lid, but if you want Foxy and WOS showing up then a primer is key.
Overall, the eyeshadows are rather buildable and don't even have the slightest trace of powderiness.
The lasting power is also good with an average of 5 hours without a primer. After 8 hours I noticed they had creased and lose vibrancy whereas with a primer they stay put for more than 9 hours (I have no idea how long they could last because I rarely wear makeup for more than 9h though).
There's, however, an odd thing my nose noticed: these eyeshadows have a weird smell (kinda...acidic?) that no other Urban Decay shadow has, I think. I don't know if it's just my palette or what.


La texture, non c'è che dire, è ottima. Questi ombretti sono vellutati, "cremosi" in senso lato, e si sfumano senza problemi. Ad onor del vero la texture la trovo anche migliore rispetto alle tonalità matte della Naked 1 ed anche confrontata con gli ombretti Inglot che ho incluso negli swatches (nelle foto più in giù).
La pigmentazione però varia a seconda del colore, come già accennato, con Foxy e WOS che sono i meno pigmentati; mentre Faint e Crave sono quelli più intensi. Se preferite un velo di colore potete applicare i primi due così come sono sulla palpebra nuda, ma se invece volete rendere Foxy e WOS ben visibili, il primer è un elemento chiave.
In generale, gli ombretti della Basics sono piuttosto modulabili e non mostrano la benché minima traccia di polverosità.
Anche la durata è buona, con una media di 5 ore senza primer. Dopo 8 ore ho notato che il trucco s'era raccolto nelle linee della palpebra e aveva perso di intensità, mentre con un primer resta intatto e perfetto per più di 9 ore (non ho idea di quanto potrebbe durare in totale perché difficilmente indosso un trucco occhi per più di 9h, ma già questo lasso di tempo mi sembra più che degno di nota).
Tuttavia, c'è uno strano dettaglio che ha notato il mio naso: questi ombretti hanno un odore...strano. Non di scadente né di tremendo ma semplicemente strano, come di un retrogusto acidulo, che non ho mai sentito in nessun altro ombretto Urban Decay. Non ho idea se sia solo la mia palette o mie allucinazioni olfattive.


The palette is teeny tiny, more than I thought, and very travel friendly - it's smaller than an iphone! It's ideal when you are on the go and wanna take with you just the basics (indeed). The casing is lightweight but feels sturdy, it's rubberized but doesn't attract all the dirt like the Naked1 or Nars packaging. Thumbs up for the mirror inside as well.
Despite its size, the 6 eyeshadows in it are full size (1.3g/0.05oz), which makes the palette virtually worth 108$/84£/105€ (17.5 x 6). Once considered that, the price tag of 28$/20£/22€ doesn't seem too bad.
I personally purchased it because wanted some basic matte shades without spending too much. I thought I'd go to Inglot but after doing a few sums I realized I would have paid way more than 20€ for similar shades.


La Naked Basics è molto piccola e molto più di quanto mi aspettassi, il che la rende adatta a viaggi ed uscite - è più piccola di un iphone!
È l'ideale per quando si resta fuori casa e si vuole portare con sé solo il basic (appunto). La confezione è leggera ma al contempo sembra robusta, ha una superficie leggermente gommata ma non diventa un ricettacolo di sporco e ditate come la Naked 1 o il packaging di Nars. Pollice in su anche per il specchio all'interno.
Nonostante la taglia però, i 6 ombretti all'interno sono full size (1.3g), il che porta la palette ad un valore virtuale di 105€ (17.5€ x 6). Alla luce di questi calcoli, pagarla sui 20€ non sembra poi così male.
Però c'è un però: dai noi il prezzo stabilito è di 25,50€ e, che lo diciamo a fare, è maggiore rispetto a quello di altri stati europei come il Regno Unito. Per quanto in senso assoluto 6 ombretti full size Urban Decay siano ben presi per tale cifra, in senso relativo, considerando due tonalità praticamente identiche, avrei preferito un prezzo inferiore (ma dal momento che in America costa 27$ e che spesso X dollari da noi diventano magicamente X Euro, stavolta ci è pure andata bene).
Quindi, se avete in programma l'acquisto, il mio consiglio è di attendere il prossimo 20% di sconto di Sephora o aspettare qualche codice promozionale su BeautyBay o altri siti inglesi: la mia l'ho acquistata lì in dicembre per 21€, cifra che avrei abbondantemente superato se fossi andata ad acquistare 4-5 ombretti matte sfusi (e volevo farlo, da Inglot, ma avrei scelto tonalità simili a queste spendendo di più e senza aver la praticità di una palette tascabile).

I thought it was worth swatching some shades against other eyeshadows I have, especially the ones in the Naked Original (or 1) palette. None of these are perfect dupes but some are similar though.
Inglot 330 is pinker and warmer compared with Foxy and WOS. Naked from the Naked 1 is a bit warmer than Naked2. Virgin from the Naked 1 is pinker than Venus and a bit more shimmery.
Buck, in the Naked 1 again, is warmer and lighter than Faint, while Inglot 327 is more red based in comparison.

Ho pensato inoltre valesse la pena fare qualche confronto con altri ombretti che avevo, soprattutto quelli nella Naked Original (o 1).
L'Inglot 330 è più rosa e caldo rispetto a Foxy e WOS. Naked della Naked 1 è un po' più caldo di Naked2. Virgin dalla Naked 1 è più rosa di Venus ed un minimo più shimmer.
Buck, di nuovo della Naked 1, è molto più caldo e più chiaro di Faint, mentre l'Inglot 327 ha una base leggermente più rossa al confronto.



Now the question many seem to ask: does it worth buying it if you already has another Naked palette?
If you only have the Naked 1, then yes, if you ask me. The Basics version is a good complement to that one and none of the shades are dupes.
But if you have the Naked 2, then no. I really don't get why Urban Decay included in the Basics two shades that you can find basically identical in the Naked 2: foxy is in both palettes and I guess Crave must be extremely similar to Blackout (well, a deep matte black, is a deep matte black after all).

In all honesty, I'm not loving it to death, but I've been getting a lot of use out of it.
You know, that pair of blue jeans that are just basic (and sometimes kinda boring to buy) but ends up being the garment you wear the most?
I feel the same about this palette. Maybe it looks boring but is extremely versatile and convenient.


Ora, la domanda che molte sembrano porsi è: ma vale la pena acquistarla se si possiede già un'altra palette Naked?
Se avete solo la Naked 1, a mio avviso, anche sì. La Basics la completa bene e non ci sono ombretti identici.
Se invece avete la Naked 2, allora no, non vale la pena. Davvero non colgo il motivo che ha spinto Urban Decay ad includere nella Basics due ombretti che si trovano praticamente identici anche nella Naked 2: Foxyè presente in entrambe le palette e immagino che Crave sia sovrapponibile a Blackout (un nero matte intenso è pur sempre un nero matte intenso, dopo tutto).

In tutta onestà, non la sto amando perdutamente, ma allo stesso tempo la sto sfruttando davvero tanto.
Avete presente quel paio di jeans blu che sono semplicemente basici (ed anche in un certo senso noiosi da acquistare) ma che finiscono con l'essere il capo che si usa di più?
Ecco. Per me vale la stessa cosa con questa palette.
Forse sembrerà noiosa ma allo stesso tempo è anche estremamente versatile e comoda.
